Bernese Mountain Dogs

  • Is a Bernese right for you?

Whilst we absolutely love Bernese and think they are the best breed in the world after consuming our lives for the last 40 years we also appreciate the breed is not right for everyone and they are a big commitment so a decision to have a Bernese needs to be well researched and planned.

In this section we will cover the realities of living with a Bernese and some of the key thing’s families will need to consider.

  • Bernese Health Testing Explained

There are a number of health tests that breeders can do to give them information on their dogs. Responsible breeders will use the results to try and make balanced breeding decisions in order to reduce health problems in their puppies. Whilst having fully tested parents does not give any guarantees it is acknowledged by the Kennel Club and British Veterinary Association (BVA) that it is a positive step to help minimise hereditary health conditions.

  • Nature vs Nuture

When raising a dog, it comes down to 2 key considerations; How the dog is bred and How the dog is cared. Whilst breeders can give no guarantees as you will see from the health testing section of this website there is lots of testing prior to breeding that breeders can do to try and reduce future health problems. However, despite the best efforts from the breeder it is down to the new owners to try nurture their puppies in the optimum way to help the dogs live a happy, healthy life.

  • Crossbreeding of Bernese

We personally dont know what more a Bernese needs, as to us they are perfect just as they are, but unfortunately the rise in demand of designer dogs, ‘healthy’ crossbreeds and ‘hypoallergenic’ Bernese crossbreeds grows everyday but the world of cross breeding isn’t all as it is advertised.
